The Department of Management, College of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph is seeking an outstanding faculty member who will become the named John F. Wood Chair in Community Engagement. This position will be housed in the Department of Management and will contribute to the culture and programming of the John F. Wood Centre for Business and Student Enterprise.
The position responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses and overseeing student consulting projects in the local community in support of both not-for-profit and profit-focused enterprise initiatives. The successful applicant will also oversee and facilitate field courses, in which students learn about and travel to socially and economically disadvantaged communities and work with community members in generating recommendations for sustainable development. In so doing, the John F. Wood Chair in Community Engagement will provide students, organizations, and communities with truly transformative learning opportunities.
Responsibilities also include applied scholarship in Management relevant to community engagement, and a variety of service activities including mentoring students in curricular and co-curricular activities, assisting with the launch of academic programs in entrepreneurship, conducting extensive outreach, and contributing to the academic responsibilities of the Wood Centre, the department, the college, and the university. The distribution of effort for this position is expected to be 50% teaching, 20% scholarship, and 30% service.
Applicants should have a graduate degree (PhD preferred) in Management or a related field and a demonstrated record of community engagement. The successful candidate will seek to further distinguish the department as an important source of relevant, applied research in Management, and will conduct extensive outreach activities to engage external contributors and disseminate knowledge to our business community. Preference will be given to applicants who have a track record of effective teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. We are particularly interested in candidates with industry experience in project management or economic development (ideally international as well as within North America) and whose research connects management theory with management practice. The candidate should be a team player with a proven record of building relationships with faculty, students, administration and with our academic and professional communities.
The Department of Management has 20 faculty members and responsibility for two majors in the Bachelor of Commerce program - Accounting, and Leadership and Organization Management. The Department also offers an undergraduate leadership certificate and contributes to CBE’s MBA, MA in Leadership, and PhD in Management. Faculty members are committed to CBE’s vision of “being and developing leaders for a sustainable world” and take a sustainable approach to organizational success through teaching and research in accounting, entrepreneurship, financial management, business policy/strategy, human resource management, organizational behaviour, leadership, and corporate social responsibility.
The Department of Management is an integral part of the College of Business and Economics (Guelph’s Business School). Formed in 2006, the College of Business and Economics is the youngest college at the University of Guelph but delivers one of the largest undergraduate business programs in Ontario with over 3,800 students currently enrolled. Our College provides a learning environment that encourages critical reflection, personal growth, and promotes traditional and emerging themes of management and economics.
